What We Do
Insulin for Life is a non-profit organization that collects in-date, unopened and uneeded insulin, test strips, and other diabetes supplies from around the world and distributes them to children and adults with diabetes in develeping countries. Each year, IFL distributes approximately 250,000 mls of insulin (equal to 25,000 x 10 ml vials) and 8,000 boxes of blood glucose test strips (or 400,000 strips). These supplies have been used to keep children alive in more than 60 countries.
If you have extra insulin or would like to help our cause, please visit How You Can Help to see what you can do.
The Process
IFL collects unused, no longer needed and in date insulin, test strips (with at least 5 months to date) and new meters. Donors include diabetes clinics and hospitals, diabetes camps, insulin companies. These supplies are then shipped to the IFL USA distribution center. From there, the supplies are sent torecognized organisations and with an agreed protocol. IFL ships to some destinations on an ongoing basis, and also following emergencies.
IFL's objectives are to:
- Collect and donate insulin, syringes, test strips and other supplies in urgent situations
- Donate supplies to several countries and Diabetes Associations continually, based on a philosophy of equity of access
- Encourage the development of similar programs elsewhere. IFL has helped establish similar programs in Europe and the USA
- Help develop and implement sustainable improvements in insulin supply in countries in need.
